Let Newcastle’s New Years Eve Winter Carnival help you see 2010 out in style, as a touch of carnival magic makes its way to the city.

NEWCASTLEGATESHEAD INITIATIVE, in partnership with Newcastle City Council, has organised a spectacular New Year’s Eve Winter Carnival starting at 2.30pm on 31 December in Newcastle City Centre.  Up to 10,000 spectators are expected to attend the celebration as the city is transformed into a festival extravaganza.

The chilly winter eve will be brought to life by the warmth of the festival atmosphere and traditional North East celebrations infused with a twist of carnival magic. The Newcastle Ice Queen will lead the parade, accompanied by a whole host of mischievous characters from cheeky monkeys to scary skeletons as she glides through the night.

300 local community performers will take part in the event, as floats, musicians and dancers parade through the city centre wearing costumes and performing dance routines that will have spectators swaying along to the steel pan beat. The evening culminates in a traditional early evening firework display at Newcastle Civic Centre at 6pm.

Producers of the Winter Carnival, Walk the Plank, are a national outdoor arts company with whom Newcastle City Council and NewcastleGateshead Initiative have developed New Year’s Eve events over a number of years, including Glowmobiles in 2007 and 2008. This year they will animate the city centre with a high quality, family friendly parade and celebratory firework display to welcome the New Year.

The specially commissioned Newcastle Ice Queen (also created by Walk the Plank) will beappearing with characters created by carnival companies LUXe and Mandinga.  LUXe’s winning entry in Dublin’s St Patrick’s Day Parade will also appear at the event.

The New Year’s Eve Winter Carnival begins at 2.30pm with music and carnival dancers in the streets around Monument, with special events happening every hour. The parade leaves Monument and heads up Northumberland Street at 5.15pm, before finishing with a bang at the Civic Centre with fireworks and fireballs at 6pm.

The festive atmosphere continues through the night as the Newcastle Ice Queen leaves the city and its revellers to celebrate the dawning of 2011. Look out for carnival themed events in hotels, bars and restaurants across the city, check the website for more details:
