31st March 2011

Categories: Latest News

With summer fast approaching, music fans, culture vultures and chocoholics are in for a tasty treat with a packed programme of events across NewcastleGateshead over the spring Bank Holiday season.

Hot on the heels of picking up three BRIT awards between them, Plan B and Tinie Tempah descend on NewcastleGateshead on Sunday 29 May to headline the Evolution Weekender with support from Example, Caribou and Darwin Deez. Saturday 28 May sees one of the legends of rock ‘n’ roll Iggy & The Stooges headline the main stage with Two Door Cinema Club, The Kills and Billy Bragg also entertaining the crowds.

Spread across three outdoor stages on NewcastleGateshead’s iconic Quayside - Spillers, Baltic and Ballast Hills, more than 60,000 revellers are expected across the two day event. The Evolution Weekender provides a great opportunity to enjoy a weekend of live music in one of England’s most exciting cities.

And if you’re looking for more reasons to take a city-break in this colourful and cosmopolitan destination see below for what else the “twin cities” have to offer over the upcoming bank holiday trio:

Easter Weekend
22-25 April
Burnopfield, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, NE16 6BG
Enjoy a perfect family weekend painting, hunting, and of course EATING Easter Eggs this Easter bank holiday. Escape to this tranquil nature reserve: a grand forest garden and landscape park created by one of the richest men in Georgian England. Gibside offers miles of woodland and riverside walks with views across the Derwent Valley. Bring the family for wildlife spotting and outdoor adventures, including nature playscape and rope-climbing challenge, or indoor fun with a milkable cow and Gibside Hall playhouse.

22-25 April
Bedes World
Church Bank, Jarrow, NE32 3DY
Easter Egg-citement
The Venerable Bede was early medieval Europe's greatest scholar and first to record the history of the English nation. He lived and worked as a monk at Jarrow. Travel back and explore his world and the amazing Golden Age of Northumbria, an age of saints and kings, at this exciting museum. Paint and hunt for Easter Eggs at this year’s Easter Fair.

Royal Wedding
29 April
Burnopfield, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, NE16 6BG
Royal Wedding Party
Celebrate the Royal wedding at Gibside, once home to the Queen Mother’s ancestors. The Queen Mother, who grew up at the Earl of Strathmore’s main residence, Glamis Castle in Scotland, used to visit Gibside for picnics as a child. And when the National Trust took over the property in the 1960s, she came back to Gibside to officially hand over the keys from her family to the National Trust.
Join a street party with a difference on the Avenue with live music, a lantern procession, tasty food and traditional games. Bring along Royal wedding memorabilia to be valued by an antique’s expert.
