From folk to pop, gospel and blues, enjoy the toe-tapping feat of extravagant festivals taking place in NewcastleGateshead this July

NewcastleGateshead will once again host an exciting line-up of authentic American performers this July with the much anticipated return of the SummerTyne Americana Festival (22 – 24 July). The annual festival showcases a range of music genres direct from the U-S of A! From soul to summer gospel, rock to blues, the festival takes place on the south bank of the River Tyne in the shadow of the stunning The Sage Gateshead. 

July’s musical celebrations also include the Mouth of the Tyne Festival (8 – 10 July). Held at the historic Tynemouth Priory and Castle and across the River Tyne in South Shields, the annual festival welcomes revellers to join the procession of live music, entertainment and bespoke performances to top off the perfect summer weekend. Music acts set to take to the stage are soul singer Beverly Knight, X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke, and pop-rock boy band, Scouting for Girls.

Other treats this July include Northern Pride (16 July), Beeswing Ladies Day at Newcastle Racecourse (23 July), and the annual Gateshead Summer Flower Show (30 & 31 July).

SummerTyne Americana Festival
22 – 24 July

The North East’s “best kept secret” returns this year with an exciting line up of Americana music acts; taking place on the south bank of the River Tyne, the festival showcases a range of favourite Americana genres, including country, soul, blues, rock and southern gospel. 
Headliners this year include Irma Thomas, aka, the Soul Queen of New Orleans; former Mavericks front man Raul Malo, who will be performing exclusively with The Sage Gateshead’s Northern Sinfonia Orchestra; and Texan singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett. For more information visit 

Mouth of the Tyne Festival
Tynemouth and South Shields
8 – 10 July
Tynemouth’s Priory & Castle hosts and annual weekend of live music, world-class street entertainers, and bespoke performances; this year’s line-up features soul singing sensation, Beverley Knight, alongside X-Factor pop star Alexandra Burke on Friday (8 July). Other confirmed chart topping music acts set to perform include boy band, Scouting for Girls on Saturday (9 July), while across the River Tyne in South Shields the part continues with street parades, performers and host of family friendly activities

Northern Pride
Leazes Park, Newcastle
16 July
Northern Pride returns to Leazes Park this year for another loud, proud day of musical events.  Northern Pride has an overall mission to reduce homophobia, promote awareness of equality and to unite LGBT communities across the region. Over 12,000 attended in 2010, with past headliners including the likes of Bass Hunter, Same Difference and Scooter. Events include a Cabaret tent, fairground rides, and a health and wellbeing zone.

Ouseburn Festival

23 - 24 July
NewcastleGateshead welcomes back this family-friendly community festival, which this year hosts an array of exciting events for both children and adults to enjoy. Drop into the Seven Stories Centre for Children’s Books for book signing and craft making activities; stop by the Stepney Bank Stables for free pony rides, petting opportunities and climbing wall fun; create an exotic farm of printed animals at Northern Print.

Dress to impress at one of the most fashionable occasions on NewcastleGateshead’s social calendar – prizes are awarded to the best dressed ladies on the day.

Gateshead Summer Flower Show
30 - 31 July
Held at Gateshead’s Central Nursery, the Gateshead Summer Flower Show is a perfect day trip for the whole family to enjoy. Events to enjoy include live entertainment, floral displays, speciality foods, craft fairs, flower arranging demonstrations and more.  For more information visit

1 - 2 July
The major event in the English Schools Athletics calendar returns to Gateshead International Stadium this July, where the cream of the nation’s young athletic talent will compete in this energetic two day event.

Bupa Great North 10K
Gateshead International Stadium and across NewcastleGateshead 
17 July
Starting and finishing at Gateshead International Stadium, the course takes runners past some of NewcastleGateshead’s most stunning sites, including BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, The Sage Gateshead, and the Tyne and Gateshead Millennium Bridges. The 10K race which ends at its start of Gateshead’s International Stadium, is the perfect warm up for Bupa’s Great North Run in September, promising to bring with it a great atmosphere and sense of achievement on completion.

NewcastleGateshead to Tynemouth
24 July
This ambitious row will take participants from Newburn to Tynemouth, passing the iconic bridges of NewcastleGateshead along the way. Crews can race to the clock, or simply set a target to successfully complete the row which ends with a well-deserved BBQ on Tynemouth beach.

13 - 14 August

The NewcastleGateshead Bridges Festival will take over the NewcastleGateshead Quayside and its famous bridges this August, celebrating the history, heritage and contemporary culture of the quayside and river landscape in fun, surprising and exciting ways. On Saturday get involved in all the festival has to offer; take a punt on a pink duck with the Metro Radio Duck Race, hunt for treasure, attend a regatta with a difference, sail off in a shanty boat and when dusk falls see and hear the Swing Bridge and Gateshead Millennium Bridge in a new fiery light. On Sunday explore the festival market, picnic, play, paddle in some very unusual spaces, and discover what’s actually hiding under the bridge.
