Enjoy chart topping acts and unusual spectacles this August in NewcastleGateshead.

NewcastleGateshead’s inaugural Bridges Festival (date) brings the summer season to a close this august with a bang. The festival celebrates the history of the iconic NewcastleGateshead Quayside and river landscape, entertaining visitors as the bridges come alive offering visitors to hear the Swing Bridge and experience the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in a new fiery light.

Visitors will have the opportunity to hunt for treasure and discover what really lurks under the bridges of NewcastleGateshead as the Quayside comes alive in exciting and surprising ways.

NewcastleGateshead will also be hosting a line up of chart topping acts at this year’s Ignition Festival (date). The two day music event at Newcastle Racecourse will showcase some of Britain’s favourite performers including headlining acts Calvin Harris, Feeder, Echo and The Bunnymen.

Other treats this August include The Billy Fury Story, Music in the Park and the production of the north east born Pitmen Painters.

13 - 14 August
The NewcastleGateshead Bridges Festival will take over the NewcastleGateshead Quayside and its famous bridges this August, celebrating the history, heritage and contemporary culture of the quayside and river landscape in fun, surprising and exciting ways. On Saturday get involved in all the festival has to offer; take a punt on a pink duck with the Metro Radio Duck Race, hunt for treasure, attend a regatta with a difference, sail off in a shanty boat and when dusk falls see and hear the Swing Bridge and Gateshead Millennium Bridge in a new fiery light. On Sunday explore the festival market, picnic, play and paddle in some very unusual spaces, and discover what’s actually hiding under the bridge.

Ignition Festival
6-7 August
Newcastle Racecourse
Ignition Festival is a two day music event held at Newcastle Racecourse, Gosforth Park on the 6th & 7th August 2011. Headliners include Calvin Harris, Feeder, Echo and the Bunnymen, Frank Turner, Miles Kane, The Go! Team, Carl Barat and Ocean Colour Scene. There will be a funfair, camping, market, food and drink village, and second stage hosted by Howard Marks and much much more…

Music in the Park
4 & 18 August
Gibside, Bunropfield
Enjoy live music in front of this National Trust managed Chapel. Kick back, relax and enjoy a cream tea or delicious finger food from Gibside Larder. 2011's programme includes brass and steel bands, folk and jazz. Normal admission applies.

The Pitmen Painters
8-13 August
Journal Tyne Theatre
Originally produced by Newcastle’s acclaimed Live Theatre, and following sell-out seasons at the National Theatre and Broadway, Bill Kenwright presents the award winning play The Pitmen Painters. Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot and directed by Max Roberts, The Pitmenn Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play in 2008.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Billy Fury’s first single Maybe Tomorrow, his original band The Fury’s Tornados are joined by the stunning Colin Gold, to remember the great man by performing live his unbelievable 29 hit singles, including Last Night Was Made For Love, I Will, Jealousy, Halfway To Paradise.
