October Art Attack in NewcastleGateshead

Enjoy a showcase of stunning contemporary visual arts this autumn as one of Europe’s most important awards for contemporary arts, the Turner Prize 2011, is staged at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead - the first non-Tate venue outside of London to host the prestigious awards.

In addition, NewcastleGateshead once again welcomes the award-winning Juice - NewcastleGateshead’s festival for children and young people, boasting a fun-fuelled 12 days of performance, comedy, poetry (and pumpkins) in venues, attractions and open air spaces across NewcastleGateshead during October half-term.

Other cultural highlights this October include the International Print Biennale hosted by Northern Print, Design Event North East and Wunderbar Festival, which hosts an exciting array of eclectic contemporary performances.

International Print Biennale

Northern Print, Newcastle
The International Print Biennale celebrates printmaking with a range of exhibitions, workshops and activities across NewcastleGateshead and Print City fringe events. The Print Awards launches the Biennale with an open call for submissions of works which are shortlisted for the exhibitions by a panel of experts in the field of printmaking. As part of the event this year, a giant piece of print will be created using a steam roller. www.northernprint.org.uk   


NewcastleGateshead Art Fair
Friday 30 September – Sunday 2 October
Hosted by The Sage Gateshead the NewcastleGateshead Art Fair, now in its fifth year, has cemented its position as the largest commercial art fair in North East England, showcasing the work of up to 50 galleries from overseas and across the UK. The Fair gives the opportunity to buy work from established and emerging galleries with an extensive range of unique and affordable art works including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photographs, prints and glass. www.ngartfair.com


Design Event North East
Friday 14 – Tuesday 18 October 2011
Various Venues
The Design Event North East Festival includes exhibitions, events, tours and talks throughout NewcastleGateshead, Sunderland, Durham and Middlesbrough. This year’s theme is Happiness. Deadgood, Prefab77, Lazarian and Susan Bradley will feature in the MART and Claire Baker, WonderStuff Studio and David Irwin will be commissioned to develop a new product as part of the Presents initiative. Other activity taking place over the festival period will include First Hand, the first collection of commercial products from the internationally renowned Design Products course at the Royal College of Art, London and a Noma Bar solo show which will include new print-based and 3-dimensional works.www.design-event.co.uk 


JUICE - NewcastleGateshead’s Festival for Children and Young People

Juice - NewcastleGateshead’s festival for children and young people takes place from Wednesday 19 – Sunday 30 October 2011.The 12 day festival showcases outstanding work created by children and young people as well as a family friendly programme delivered by regional, national and international artists. Highlights in this year’s festival include, Dance Please! – an interactive playground of movement, light and sound and The Rememberers - a live action graphic novel written and performed by Kenny Baraka. www.juicefestival.co.uk


The Turner Prize at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art

BALTIC is the first non-Tate venue outside London to host The Turner Prize, widely recognised as one of the most important and prestigious awards for the visual arts in Europe. The Turner Prize is a contemporary art award that was set up in 1984 to celebrate new developments in contemporary art. The prize is awarded each year to 'a British artist under fifty for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding'. www.balticmill.com

Theatre Royal 175th Birthday
Throughout autumn 2011
The Theatre Royal is about to change. But to create the future, it is going back to its great past. The Theatre Royal is one of only nine Grade 1 Listed theatres in England and is regarded by many as the UK’s finest theatre building. The £4.75m refurbishment project will introduce the highest modern standards of comfort, and improve energy and carbon efficiency. In the auditorium new seating will be installed at all levels as well as new lighting and ventilation, major renovations to fabrics, carpets and paintwork and extensive gold-leaf work.

The re-opening on 12 September will be followed by a major celebration in February 2012 as the Theatre Royal celebrates its 175th anniversary. More information about the birthday programme is to come, but it’s set to be a spectacular performance! www.theatreroyal.co.uk
