ONE North East, Newcastle City Council and NewcastleGateshead Initiative, have announced the appointment of two consultants to coordinate the marketing and promotion of the North East’s programme for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Nicky Harrison and Emily Till will, over the next year, deliver a programme of communications supporting the London 2012 Games in North East England and the Host City of Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The newly created post will seek to maximise opportunities to profile both NewcastleGateshead and the wider North East region before and during the London 2012 Games. The eyes of the world will be on London and the rest of the United Kingdom during the 2012 Games and this provides an unrivalled opportunity for NewcastleGateshead and the North East to showcase the destination and the business, sports facilities and cultural assets that are on offer across the region.

The role is also important in ensuring a cohesive, unified voice for the London 2012 Games in the region.  One of the main requirements of the role will be to coordinate communications activity across the North East and ensure all the partners, from local authorities, sponsors, businesses and blue light services, deliver a joined up approach to their communications.

Emily and Nicky will be based at destination marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative. The tourism body is already playing an important role in galvanising and engaging local businesses around the London 2012 Games.  Its work with Visit Britain (Britain’s national tourism agency) has also helped ensure significant profile for NewcastleGateshead among overseas broadcasters in advance of the Games.  The London 2012 Games will also feature heavily in its national and international campaign work to attract visitors to the destination next year.

PR consultant Nicky Harrison is one of the partners in White Hot Communications, which she will continue to run.  Her clients include – BUPA Great North Run Culture, NewcastleGateshead Art Fair, Creative Partnerships and Berwick Film Festival.  Emily Till has previously worked in marketing at The Sage Gateshead, Northern Sinfonia and the Harrogate International Festival, having started her working life in the press office at the Southbank Centre in London.

Nicky commented: “We are really excited about promoting Olympic and Paralympic activity in the North East: we are aware that many people think that the London 2012 Games are all about London and the South East, but there are many potential benefits for the North East.  We look forward to making sure that everyone in the region gets the most out of 2012, and feels a justifiable sense of pride in Newcastle being an Olympic Host City.”

Emily commented: “Being involved in a project like this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity.  Our immediate priority is to support the promotion of the Olympic football at St James’ Park.  We also look forward to helping regional schools and businesses get the most from the London 2012 Olympic and ParalympicGames, and to ensuring that everyone can enjoy events such as the Cultural Olympiad and the Torch Relay.”

Sarah Stewart, Chief Executive at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, commented: “We are delighted that by appointing Nicky and Emily to fulfil this contract we are able to draw on over four decades of communications experience and expertise.  Between them, they have an extensive track record in PR and marketing, and we feel sure that they are the best people possible to fulfil our communications agenda to maximise the national and international opportunities of Newcastle hosting London 2012 Games activities.”

One of Emily and Nicky’s first roles will be to reach out to local businesses, local authorities and agencies in NewcastleGateshead and the North East involved in the London 2012 Games, to help coordinate the region’s extensive promotional plans and communicate the business opportunities still open around the Games.
