Angel Delight for Event Planners in NewcastleGateshead

21st November 2012

Categories: Convention Bureau News

Following the success of NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau’s client dinner at Syon House in September, the Bureau last week (15-16 November) welcomed 12 of the UK’s top event planners to the destination to see first-hand the experiences on offer to delegates.

Showcasing the destination as a conference attendee might see it, the Bureau hoped to demonstrate why 86% of people who come to a meeting or event in NewcastleGateshead choose to return with family or friends.

Adrian Evans, senior business tourism manager at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said: “Syon House was a fantastic opportunity for our venue colleagues to meet event organisers, make connections and generate enquiries. But delegate experience is key to ensuring any event is a success and it’s so it’s incredibly important for organisers to really get under the skin of any destination they’re interested in.

“We have wonderful venues offering world-class facilities, but this client visit was all about NewcastleGateshead’s famous Geordie spirit, welcoming personality and the varied experiences on offer to delegates when they’re not doing business.”

Over the two days, organisers were introduced to the rich heritage of NewcastleGateshead by a group of ‘Time Bandits’ delivering a theatrical whistle stop tour featuring neoclassical architecture at the Theatre Royal, the UK’s last surviving news reel cinema at the art deco Tyneside Cinema and a homely local lunch atop the Norman castle keep – extending fantastic views across the city and the River Tyne.

They also came face-to-feet with the iconic Angel of the North, toured the hallowed ‘third cathedral’ of St James Park and stepped into another dimension, sampling the new 4D motion ride at the Life Science Centre.

Sinead MacMahon, account coordinator from Banks Sadler said: “It was really refreshing to be invited to a familiarisation visit where the focus wasn’t only geared towards the size and facilities of various room types, but also gave the opportunity to see a place as one of our delegates might experience it. The visit highlighted that NewcastleGateshead is certainly a destination any delegate would travel to.”

NewcastleGateshead continues to grow its reputation as a destination to host meetings and events. This was recognised in May when NewcastleGateshead broke into the UK top 10 and jumped a staggering 66 places to 93rd in Europe according to the latest poll compiled by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).

NewcastleGateshead: Five experiences your delegate will love:

• Get to grips with science and shake up your delegates at The Life Science Centre with a ‘Science of Cocktails’ workshop, they’ll even get to sample their experiment.

• Take an icon into your own hands and tilt the Gateshead Millennium Bridge to celebrate your event; you can even have the structure washed in your corporate colours.
• Tyneside Cinema is the UK’s finest surviving newsreel cinema, delegates can become stars of the show with its pop up film school where they can shoot, edit and star in their own film, featuring a grand premier at the end.

• From banging steel drums to playing the fiddle, delegates can hit a musical note in a fun and lively environment at NewcastleGateshead’s flagship venue and international music centre, The Sage Gateshead.

• Blackfriars is home to the UK’s oldest dining hall dating back to 1239. Transport delegates back in time with an authentic medieval banquet fit for an ancient king, complete with flagons of ale and wine, served by esteemed friars and town wenches.
