NewcastleGateshead Initiative names Heel & Toe charity of the year 2012

10th May 2012

Categories: Latest News

NewcastleGateshead Initiative has announced Heel & Toe its charity of the year for 2012 following votes from staff inspired by the Durham based charity’s work with children suffering from Dyspraxia and Cerebral Palsy.

Heel & Toe works with children who suffer from Dyspraxia, Cerebral Palsy and other muscular or movement conditions, to provide free conductive education therapy. The method builds coordination and muscle strength through play and exercise, and the charity was formed in 2008 after a national charity providing the service pulled out of the local area.

On the partnership, which commenced in April 2012, Sarah Stewart, chief executive at destination management & marketing organisation NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Heel & Toe throughout this financial year. The work they do to enrich the lives of so many children and their families across the North East is incredibly important. At NewcastleGateshead Initiative we understand our support can help to gain exposure and funds for local charities and we’re committed to working in partnership with Heel & Toe in order to grow their profile across the breadth of our partnership network, where we work with around 165 businesses.”

Currently the charity relies solely on donations from parents and the public and aims to raise £1m to build a specialised unit to facilitate all who need their help, and a further £300,000 annually as demand for the charity’s services continues to grow. Amanda Tweedy, development and fundraising officer at Heel & Toe, said “The fact that the team at NewcastleGateshead Initiative realised how important their support would be to helping our children continue coming to the facility each week was a big boost for us and will make a huge difference.

“The charity receives no government funding and the demand for our service is so high that in 2011 we provided over 10,500 free hours of therapy which typically would have cost families £650,000 if they had to pay. We have quickly had to adapt and grow to meet the increased demand for our services as the only local charity supporting children through conductive education therapy free of charge. On behalf of all our children and their parents, I’d like to say a big thank you to NewcastleGateshead Initiative for their support.”

NewcastleGateshead Initiative will be organising various fundraising activities throughout 2012 and supporting several of Heel & Toe’s planned events in the coming months, including a Zip Slide and Sky Dive. Since starting the charity partnership scheme last year with St Oswald’s Hospice, NewcastleGateshead Initiative has pledged to use its position within the business community to help charities raise their profiles as well as funds.
