Street science helps NewcastleGateshead secure meetings success

30th May 2013

Categories: Convention Bureau News

NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau are bringing the fun and creativity of science to the Meetings Show UK this July, as the destination gears up to host the British Science Festival in September, and a multitude of science focussed association conferences throughout the summer months.

Meetings Show UK takes place 09-11 July at Olympia, London. NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau will be attending with 5 partners and are taking their hugely successful ‘Delegate Experiences’ campaign with them, with Newcastle University’s Street Science team helping engage attendees with one of the many unique experiences on offer to those attending conferences in NewcastleGateshead.

Sarah Stewart, chief executive at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “I’m delighted the Street Science team from Newcastle University can join us at Meetings Show UK. Our strength as a world-leading scientific destination helps to attract millions of pounds worth of conferences every year, and hosting British Science Festival in September will further strengthen this reputation. The Street Scientists will help showcase some of the fun and creativity at the heart of science, and further demonstrates that NewcastleGateshead is a destination that conference organisers and delegates both love.”

Two of Newcastle University’s Street Scientists, will be on hand providing a sneak preview of some of the educational entertainment expected from the British Science Festival when it comes to Newcastle later this year (7th – 12th September). Demonstrating how you can accurately predict a person’s age using simple mathematics, how to turn a waistcoat inside out without taking it off and how to create a soda bottle vortex, the pair will uncover the science behind a range of puzzling phenomena.

The 26-strong team of science buskers bring to life science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in a unique way. Jenny Rigby, a second year biology student at Newcastle University, said: “I’ve always loved science and I’m really keen to share my enthusiasm with other people. When science is demonstrated in this way the excitement and enthusiasm we feel about it as presenters is contagious and the audience really catches it.”

Also joining the Convention Bureau will be Sage Gateshead, Rockliffe Hall, Hilton Newcastle Gateshead, Newcastle Civic Centre and Newcastle United (Sodexo).

Sarah added: “Having the opportunity to talk to national and international event organisers is vital to ensuring we capture and convert all opportunities in this fast moving market. It was immediately clear to us that The Meetings Show UK would be a key event for us, targeting influential buyers in an innovative way through their enhanced hosted buyer program.”

One of five science and healthcare focussed conferences due to take place this summer is Behaviour2013, the 33rd International Ethological Conference (IEC) delivered jointly with the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB). It is due to take place 04-08 August 2013 at Sage Gateshead and alone is worth an estimated £1.4m to the destination and is expected to attract around 750 delegates.

Other science and health based events taking place in NewcastleGateshead this summer include:

• 4th International Symposium on Bone Conduction Hearing – Craniofacial Osseo-Integration, June at Sage Gateshead
• International Collaboration on Participatory Health Research, June at Newcastle University
• Therapeutic Tolerance, June at Newcastle University
• Nutrition Society Summer Meeting 2013, July at Newcastle University
