Blue for a boy

23rd July 2013

Categories: Convention Bureau News

Gateshead Council will be celebrating the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's son this evening - by turning the Gateshead Millennium Bridge blue.

The bridge is illuminated using a sophisticated computer-controlled lighting system that operates via eight high-powered light cannons located below the arch on either side of the river. The cannons project light upwards onto the underside of the arch creating what appears to be a streak of colour across the sky.

The lighting system can be programmed to project any colour of the rainbow – and even a rainbow – as well as stripes and moving swirls of colour. Tonight it will be a uniform blue in honour of the new prince.

The Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Jack Graham, says:

“As a father myself, I know that the birth of any child is a joy. But the birth of a new prince is a special occasion for the whole nation.

“We are therefore marking this important moment in history in the most visible way possible by turning the Gateshead Millennium Bridge blue. We hope that thousands of people will see it tonight and remember this day in the years to come.”

Sarah Stewart, chief executive at destination management and marketing organisation NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “The lighting of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge this evening, which was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 2002, is a lovely way to celebrate the arrival of the Royal baby with a bright blue congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

“With so much happening in and around the Quayside, I’d certainly encourage the public to come and share in the celebrations at one of the many river front bars and restaurants with fantastic views of one of our best loved icons.”

The bridge will be visible from all around the Quayside and Gateshead Quays until around 1.00am.
